Call for Papers

Biotechnology Healthcare publishes peer-reviewed articles relating to healthcare applications of biotechnology.

To provide a comprehensive array of articles with potentially significant implications for our readers, we will publish review articles and papers reporting the results of scientific research. Topics include but are not limited to new therapies and diagnostic capabilities, clinical outcomes, and the cost-effectiveness of programs and products. We also welcome bylined essays from qualified experts in the fields of biotechnology, specialty pharmacy, managed care, and health benefits whose experience can be instructive for payers, purchasers, and providers of health care services.

The editors are interested in reviewing unpublished manuscripts that report on such subjects as: the processes and procedures involved with integrating biotech agents into treatment plans; clinical and/or financial outcomes of integrating biotech therapies into benefit packages; how advances in biotechnology affect diagnostic applications; pharmacoeconomic analysis of biotech products; the relevance of Human Genome Project discoveries and functional genomics to disease; the use of public databases and computational methods in meeting challenges in medicine; and the effects of biologic therapies, diagnostics, and devices on health-benefit design and access to care. Review papers and essays discussing health policy aspects of emerging biotech therapies and diagnostic capabilities are also appropriate. The editors welcome case studies that evaluate the use of information technologies for converting molecular biological data into knowledge that can improve patient care and/or further therapeutic development.

David Nash, MD, MBA, the Dr. Raymond C. and Doris N. Grandon Professor and chairman of the Department of Health Policy at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, leads Biotechnology Healthcare’s editorial advisory board. Nash has enrolled a distinguished panel, listed herein, to review manuscripts under consideration for publication.

Biotechnology Healthcare is indexed in CINAHL and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts.

Instructions for Authors of Submissions for Peer Review

Biotechnology Healthcare welcomes original manuscripts for consideration of publication. To streamline the review process, we ask authors to adhere to these guidelines:

Biotechnology Healthcare accepts only manuscripts that have not been published elsewhere and are not under consideration for publication by other print or electronic media. Authors are required to disclose any direct or indirect conflict of interest or appearance of conflict of interest. Download the Biotechnology Healthcare conflict-of-interest form from www.biotechnologyhealthcare.com/BH_AuthorsDisclosure.pdf. Print out the form and submit the signed document with your article. Should Biotechnology Healthcare agree to publish a submission, the author(s) agree to transfer the copyright to Biotechnology Healthcare. It is understood that articles written by U.S. government employees as part of their official duties are not copyrightable.

All references in text must be placed within parentheses, using the first author’s last name and the year of publication, e.g., (Smith 2002). Additionally, at the end of the paper, include an alphabetical list of all citations mentioned in text, and format each reference in accordance with the American Medical Association Manual of Style (9th edition).

An electronic version of the manuscript should be sent via e-mail to: mdalzell.mgdcare@medimedia.com. Most word-processing programs are acceptable, though Microsoft Word is preferred. Additionally, one paper printout or typed manuscript should be sent to:

Michael D. Dalzell
Editor
Biotechnology Healthcare
780 Township Line Road
Yardley, PA 19067

A self-addressed, stamped postcard should be included if acknowledgment of receipt of work is desired. Materials not accepted for publication will be returned only if a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage is included.

Unless otherwise specified herein, manuscripts should conform to the ÒUniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals,Ó developed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. These requirements are posted on the ICMJE’s Web site at: http://www.icmje.org.

Article content must be clearly related to biotechnology applications of healthcare with respect to processes, products, public policy implications, or financing and delivery of care with biological agents and/or diagnostic capabilities. Biotechnology Healthcare’s readers consist largely of healthcare executives (most with medical or pharmacy degrees), payer and institutional pharmacy and therapeutics committee members, corporate and government purchasers, and healthcare providers whose patient populations routinely receive biotech therapies.

On Your End

Please include a cover letter with any submission. The cover letter should include:

  • The manuscript’s title and a brief explanation of the importance of the study to our readers.
  • A statement affirming that this work is not under consideration for publication by other media, and indicating that it has not been published elsewhere.
  • An unambiguous disclosure statement identifying any potential financial conflicts of interest, and acknowledging the source(s) of financial support.
  • A list of all authors. Authorship is defined by Section 2 of the Uniform Requirements. For each author, include full name (given, middle initial, and surname), advanced degrees, pertinent affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses.
  • A designation for a corresponding author.
  • Consent to transfer copyright to Biotechnology Healthcare on publication.
  • Signatures of all authors.

Please review Section 4 of the Uniform Requirements before submitting work. Manuscripts on paper or as electronic word-processing files should be double-spaced on letter-size pages and should be no more than 4,000 words including abstract and references, but not including tables, figures, or illustrations. Tables, figures, illustrations, and references should be prepared as specified in the Uniform Requirements. We may newly render figures and illustrations. Each table and figure should be referenced in the text, but the information they convey should not duplicate text. Please include an abstract of 250 or fewer words, summarizing the key points of the work and including key terms. Please also include written permission from publishers to reproduce previously published illustrations and tables.

For manuscripts other than review articles and essays, the text should be organized under the following headings: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. Spell out abbreviations and acronyms on first reference. Use generic drug names when pharmaceutical products are identified, unless brand names are important. When brand names are used, add a footnote to indicate both generic name and manufacturer. Acknowledgments may be included after the body of the text.

References should not appear at the bottom of text pages, but should be included at the end of the document in an alphabetical list. Authors are responsible for accuracy and completeness of references.

On Our End

Biotechnology Healthcare will review the manuscript for appropriateness. Articles being considered for publication will be sent to expert peer reviewers selected by the editor, while other submissions will be discharged promptly. Manuscripts recommended by peer reviewers for publication are edited in-house. If the reviewers recommend extensive revisions, however, authors may be asked to revise their work and then to resubmit the article electronically.

Biotechnology Healthcare reserves the right to edit text for clarity, style, and length. Final drafts will be sent to authors for review before publication.
