Does Forskolin Actually Cause Weight Loss?

To this day, there have only been two small studies investigating the effects of forskolin on weight loss in humans.

However, both of these studies were randomized, controlled trials, which are the gold standard of scientific research.

The larger of the two recruited 30 overweight and obese men, and assigned them to one of two groups.

  • Forskolin group: 15 men were given 250mg of forskolin extract (10% concentration) twice a day for 12 weeks.
  • Placebo group: 15 men took placebos with no active ingredients for the same time.

After twelve weeks, researchers found that the men who took forskolin lost significantly more fat, although there was no significant change in body weight.

Additionally, men taking forskolin extract saw a significant increase in free testosterone levels, which helped stimulate the release of fat cells, which may explain the fat loss.

Testosterone can also promote an increase in muscle mass, which would explain the uptick in muscle mass in the forskolin group.

In the second group, 23 overweight women received a 500mg dose of forskolin extract for 12 weeks. However, researchers found forskolin had no significant effects on fat loss, but they did feel that forskolin may protect against weight gain.

The thing to take away here is that forskolin seems to cause a positive change in body composition. When used with a healthy diet and exercise, weight loss may come quickly.
